Joint operation conducted in Greenside.

During August a joint operation was conducted in Greenside by the SAPS, JMPD, EMS, Region B COJ and the Security Companies active in the area, including CSS Tactical, 24/7 and Fidelity. Greenside’s local Councillor was also on the scene to observe and mediate if necessary.

The objective of the operation was to respond to numerous complaints from residents about noise pollution, parking and traffic violations, pavement encroachments, drugs and other illegal activities.

The operation began around 9pm and involved SAPS, JMPD and Security vehicles closing off Gleneagles Road at Barry Hertzog, Greenway and Muirfield Road so that no vehicles could leave without being searched, including the occupants of the vehicles, both male and female. The Security companies assisted in the searches and were deputised by the police to make arrests if necessary.

JMPD officers focussed on traffic violations and the confiscation of illegal furniture (chairs, tables and umbrellas) obstructing the pavements. Some businesses believe that as long as they leave 1.5m for pedestrians they are within the law. In fact, unless special permission has been obtained from the City Council to use part of the pavement for business, this encroachment is considered illegal.

One arrest was made, property was confiscated and fines were issued for health and safety violations within several establishments. The operation ended at around 10.30pm.

The proliferation of bars and places of amusement in the area attract rowdy, impressionable youths to the neighbourhood, and this in turn is attracting drug dealers and other unsavoury elements. Greenside is zoned as a residential area where only restaurants should be operating and any establishment offering live or loud music and serving alcohol without food to patrons is breaking the law.
