Don Quixote classic ballet set to dazzle

National Ballet of Cuba and Michael Revie of Mzansi Productions in Don Quixote Pic by Susanne Holbaek.

The scintillating ballet classic Don Quixote returns to the stage
For the first time since the mid-1990s ballet audiences in Durban and Johannesburg will be treated to the traditional full-length version of the great ballet Don Quixote when the scintillating classic comes to the stage later this year.

The staging by Mzansi Productions will feature leading South African ballet dancers as well as 18 Cuban dancers and a further contingent of other international dancers. Mzansi Productions receives generous funding from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) and it is this support which makes the new production of Don Quixote possible.

The Mzansi Productions staging will be based on the acclaimed Cuban version, promising to make Don Quixote one of the ballet highlights of recent years. With their stylish classical technique, the Cuban dancers are today applauded as the finest performers of this great bravura classic of the international ballet repertoire.

Based on an episode in Cervantes epic novel and set in bustling Barcelona, the ballet tells a story of the triumph of young love over parental match-making. The beautiful, audacious Kitri and the dashing but poor Basilio are determined to marry but Kitri’s father has more ambitious plans for his daughter.

The sparkling comedy unfolds in a cascade of dazzling classical ballet which features some of the most celebrated showpieces in all ballet, the most famous of which is the virtuoso Don Quixote Pas de Deux.
The new décor and costumes will be designed by leading South African stage designer, Andrew Botha.
