Montecasino Bird Gardens - the best place to spend school holidays
From March 28 to April 15, 2011, Joburg’s best kept secret – the Montecasino Bird Gardens – will be offering a fun-filled educational holiday activity programme for children aged seven to 12 years.
From ducks to tortoises, sloths, parrots, toucans, cranes, lizards, snakes and more – there is no end to the amount of fun your little explorer can have as they discover all about the unique and interesting animals that form part of our animal kingdom.
Each day is themed and offers different activities, including art and craft sessions where kids will create take-home crafts for mom and dad.
Taking place every weekday from 8.30am to 2.30pm throughout the school holidays, the Bird Gardens Holiday Programme offers the perfect mix of fun and learning. The cost of R130 per child includes a kiddie’s meal and a cold drink, as well as a snack pack with crisps and an Oros™.

Monday March 28: Primate Pals - Primates are fun to be around. They look like us, communicate like us and even eat like us. Let us make some toys for them and observe their ability to adapt to their environment
Tuesday March 29: Toucan Antics - Colourful Toucans live in forests and eat fruit. Find out how they are adapted to live in forests of South America.Let us make some toys for them and observe their ability to adapt to their environment
Wednesday March 30: Crazy Constrictors - Slithering snakes deserve some attention. Especially when they are such skilled hunters. Constrictors have no venom. Come and have your picture taken with one of them.
Thursday March 31: Creepy Critters - Frogs! Spiders! Scorpions! Sounds scary, does it not? Let’s learn about them and how to respect each other’s space.
Friday April 1: Train or be Trained - Do you want to learn how to train your pets at home? Come and learn some tips and try it out on one of our parrots.
Monday April 4: Manic Mongooses - Suricates? What’s that? Come and see how these amazing mammals survive the hottest hots and the coldest colds.
Tuesday April 5: Dancing Cranes - Our National Bird is a Crane. Can you tell me which one? They are the most graceful birds on our planet. Spend some time learning about them and dancing like them.
Wednesday April 6: Lazy Lizards - Slimy? Slippery? Not on your life! They are so well adapted to living all over the world in various biomes. Come and touch one and make a model of their homes in the wild.
Thursday April 7: Rodent Rage - Teeth that rip through almost anything? Let see what makes them tick and how they run. We even take a glance into the inside of one
Friday April 8: Keeper for a day - Are you an animal lover? Would you like to know what it takes? From paperwork to cleaning up and out. Animal husbandry is a science.
Monday April 11: Sloths in the Gym - Sloths are slow but still are strong! Come and spend some time with them and build your muscles during our mini Olympics.
Tuesday April 12: Webbed Wonderers - Ducks, Geese and Swans all have webbed feet. Do they use them to swim, ski or fly? Water and Air are two places that require specific appendages. Let’s learn about them and their adaptations.
Wednesday April 13: Tortoise Trouble - House on your back? What a load to carry. Could you? Let’s come and play with some hard shelled critters and move around the gardens in search of these amazing creatures.
Thursday April 14: Parrots ‘n Pets - Pets are great to have around and are good company. Let’s learn how to take care of several different pets and treat them with toys we made ourselves.
Friday April 15: Train or be Trained - Do you want to learn how to train your pets at home? Come and learn some tips and try it out on one of our parrots.
